GORZEGNO

Whoever is passing through Alta Langa today must take the time to stop in Gorzegno, in the Bormida Valley, just 36 km from Alba, 56 km from Asti, 58 km from the Ligurian Sea.

Gorzegno is truly fascinating: it stretches out on a wide plateau of the Bormida Valley, surrounded by a set of stone terraces: the typical dry stone walls.
Seen from above, Gorzegno resembles the proscenium of an ancient theater in a wild wood.
The town is dominated by the ruins of the ancient castle of the Marquises Del Carretto, who from here dominated a vast territory, from 1345 to 1726, when the Marquisate of Gorzegno was ceded to the Savoy.

The historic center retains many traces of its ancient splendor, while the parish church of Santa Maria della Neve, outside the town, with its archaeological finds testifies to the Roman origin of Gorzegno, or Cohors Aennii, according to some interpreters.
The ancient villages that dot the territory are the living testimony of an art that characterizes the Alta Langa: the working of stone and the construction of dry stone walls, an art that UNESCO in 2018 included in the List of Cultural Heritage immaterial of Humanity.
